Change in hoof morphology during barefoot to shod transition and 8 week reshoening cycle
administrator,
Characteristics: 4 years old Quarter horse gelding
Husbandary practise: living on a bare 2 hectar pasture 24/7 with the herd of approximately 15 other horses. Hay and salt accessible 24/7.
Use: future cow horse
State of the hooves : whole life barefoot until 4 years old. Shod the first time after few months of basic training beacuse he was sensitive on stony surfaces. The owner contiued the training barefoot as long as it was in a sandy arena. After few month the horse started to ride outdoors in the countryside. The owner decided to apply open metal shoes to improve the horse´s comfort. Reshoeing cycle 8 weeks. The farrier was not willing to shorten the reshoeing cycle.
Summary of trimming/shoeing intervals:
Foal to 8/2022 trim every 8 weeks convetional farrier
8/2022 – 3/2023 P3Trim every 4 weeks
3/2023 reshoeing with metal shoes every 8 weeks
The photographs show state and change of morphology of the left front hoof before and after aplication of P3Trim. And later comparing the change of morphology between barefoot while P3Trim applied and after 3 reshoeings cycles.
From reading the coronet/ hairline we can see that the hoof capsule was deformed. The heels were underrun and were pushing the horn in the quarters causing cracs. After 2 applications of P3Trim every 4 weeks the hoof capsule and thus the coronet / hairline relaxed. The caudal part of the hoof was little bit contracted. After two applications of P3Trim the heels relaxed and decontracted. After 3 reshoeing cycles the heels are returning to more under-run state. The hoofcapsule (hoofwalls) is overgrown, lifting the sole and frog grom the ground. In August 2023 the hoofcapsule (hoofwalls) is overgrown, lifting the sole and frog grom the ground. Green line is assumes the possition of the coffin bone within the hoof capsule. The blue line assumes the surface of the sole above ground. The 8 week reshoeing cycles are transfering most of the weight of the horse onto the hoofwalls. The frog and sole are not engaged enough. As result of not enough contact with the ground, the heels are becoming contracted and caudal failure is in process, which is indicated by the change in shape of the hairline.
